Terms of Service
To receive alerts you must have a mobile device capable of receiving text messages. Consult your current mobile contract as you may incur a cost for incoming text messages. By opting into this UNI service you are agreeing to incur this cost, if any.
Information
The University of Northern offers a variety of different messaging services for UNI affiliated persons. See below for the different messaging services available as well as their Opt-In and Opt-out steps. SMS messaging from the University of Northern Iowa will originate from 23177 or 63079 for UNI Alert related messages and 98619 for all other SMS messages.
Message and data rates may apply for any messages sent to you from the University of Northern Iowa. You will receive 1 message per user request. For questions about your text or data plan, contact your wireless provider.
Opt-In
The University of Northern Iowa offers several different messaging services each with different opt-in procedures. Only current and prospective students who have applied for admission as well as current faculty and staff are able to take part in the messaging services provided by the University of Northern Iowa.
Student Business related texts
To opt-in to receive student business related text messages such as alerts that grades are available, eligibility for registration, financial aid has been prepared, etc. visit the Update My Personal Information application. Complete the SMS/Text Messaging section on the Address & Phone tab. Student business related text messages will come from the number 98619.
UNI Alert
To opt-in to receive UNI Alert text messages such as alerts of severe weather or dangers on campus, visit the Update My Personal Information application. Complete the Optional Contact Data section on the UNI Alert tab. SMS messages sent via the UNI Alert system will come from 23177 or 63079.
Self Service Password Reset
To opt-in to receive text messages to assist you when a password has been forgotten, visit the Self Service Password Reset Registration application. Follow the instructions there to opt-in to receive security codes to assist in resetting your password. Self Service Password Reset related text messages will come from the number 98619.
Opt-Out
The University of Northern Iowa offers several different messaging services each with different opt-out procedures.
Student Business related texts
To opt-out from receiving student business related text messages such as alerts that grades are available, eligibility for registration, financial aid has been prepared, etc. visit the Update My Personal Information application. Check "Remove this phone number" next to the Cell Phone to Receive Text Message(s): field in the SMS/Text Messaging section on the Address & Phone tab.
UNI Alert
To opt-out of receiving UNI Alert text messages such as alerts of severe weather or dangers on campus, visit the Update My Personal Information application. In the Optional Contact Data section on the UNI Alert tab, check "Remove this phone number" next to the Cell Phone To Receive Text Message: field to remove that number from receiving future UNI Alert text messages. The same can be done if a number is listed in the Additional Cell Phone to Receive Text Message field.
Self Service Password Reset
To opt-out of receiving text messages to assist you with password resets, visit the Self Service Password Reset Registration application. Follow the instructions there to update your settings to use a secondary email for security codes to assist in resetting your password instead of text messages
Non-UNI Affiliated users
UNI-affiliated persons should use the Opt-Out steps provided above. If you are not affiliated with the University of Northern Iowa and are receiving text messages from one of the messaging services offered, you can text a "STOP" command to one of the numbers listed below to unsubscribe from all UNI messaging services.
If you are receiving UNI Alert text messages, send "STOP UNI" to 23177 or 63079 to cancel that SMS service.
For all other text messages you are incorrectly receiving, text "STOP" to 98619 to cancel the SMS service.
After you send the SMS "STOP" message, you will receive a confirmation SMS message that your text has been received. Your phone number will be removed from UNI messaging services within 1-2 business days. After this, you will no longer receive SMS messages from the University of Northern Iowa.

For help with Self-Service Passphrase Reset messages, text "HELP SSPR" to 98619.
For help with opting-out of Self-Service Passphrase Reset messages, text "STOP SSPR" to 98619.

For information on how to opt-out of UNI's messaging services, text "STOP" or "CANCEL" to 98619.
After you send one of the messages listed, you will receive a response with information pertaining to the message you sent.
